The Quaich, the ancient drinking vessel and “loving cup” of Scotland, is symbolic of friendship, sharing and sustenance. Traditionally filled with whisky and used to toast the welfare of the community, to welcome newcomers or to bless new alliances, the Quaich has been at the heart of Scottish custom and conviviality throughout the ages. Double-handled, sometimes triple, the Quaich is designed to be offered from one person to another, conveying trust and generosity. Once the toastmaster has given the toast, they will drink the contents, turn the Quaich over and kiss the underside of the cup as a gesture that the ritual is complete and without a drop being wasted.
